New Cutting Garden & Pollinator Garden

A new Cutting Garden and Pollinator Garden for our Howard County client. A previous client of ours reached out looking to get two gardens installed, one that the client could use to create bouquets and one to attract birds, bees, and butterflies.

Preparing Gardens for Planting

The two existing beds were invaded by aggressive invasives and our client chose to smother them to get rid of the weeds. This is a great method to control invasives, it’s called solarizing. You staple down a black cloth/plastic and let the heat of the sun bake the plants below. This requires very little effort but does require time and patience. Doing this in the heat of the summer is great but you can also do this in the fall in prep for planting in spring. We recommend checking how the invasives look every once in a while as you may need to wait longer to remove the cover for more aggressive plants.

Choosing Natives for Cutting Garden

Choosing plants for the cutting garden was a lot of fun! Our project manager, Alex, chose plants that offered bloom times throughout the growing season, had sturdy stems, and a variety of flower shapes and colors. She also picked Cornus stolonifera or red twig dogwood so the client could use the branches in winter decorations.
