From Overgrown to Restored: A Native Plant Backyard Overhaul

Regrading and Stonework in a Native Plant Backyard
From there, the crew started by removing all the existing vegetation, excluding the trees and remove the old wooden retaining wall. Then built a short dry stack stone wall at the base of the slope to help hold soil and mulch in when it storms. Next, they reset the stone pathway along the right side of the backyard. Finally, came the fun part—placing and planting a variety of native shrubs and perennials!

Designing Native Plant Beds for Slopes and Part Shade
Over the winter, the client reached out to add on another section of their backyard to match the slope area. To bring the vision to life, our Project Manager Alex, worked with the client on the design and placement of the beds. In particular, she focused on part-shade loving plants such as Carex pennsylvanica, Dryopteris marginalis, and Stylophorum diphyllum. In addition, she chose deeply rooted/spreading plants such as Chasmanthium latifolium and Viburnum dentatum to help stabilize the slope which helps hold the soil in place. The client was also looking for a natural privacy screening on the right side of the backyard. Alex chose Aronia melanocarpa ‘Viking’, Cercis canadensis and Thuja occidentalis ‘Emerald’ to go along the fence line to help block the view of the neighbors.
