Summer Planting: Is It Too Late to Install?

We have been getting the question about planting in summer, “Is it too late to install?” quite often. Many people believe that the only good times to plant are spring and fall. While those seasons are certainly popular for planting. The truth is that you can install plants successfully throughout much of the year.
As long as the ground is not frozen, planting is possible. At LGS, we routinely install gardens from April through mid-December with great success. The key to a successful garden isn’t necessarily the season, it’s proper planting and care after installation.

Why Summer Planting Is Not Too Late

Installing during summer allows you to enjoy your new landscape right away and for your plants to take advantage of that all-day-photosynthesis-buffet of the summer sun. Newly installed plants need energy to grow strong roots, put out loads of green growth, and especially to produce flowers. Fall blooming plants especially benefit from the head start of summer. As it gives them plenty of time to establish before expending energy to bloom. For the gardener, rather than waiting until fall or the following spring, you can immediately begin enhancing your outdoor space, creating habitat for pollinators, and improving your property’s curb appeal.

Summer Planting Success Starts with Water

Photosynthesis is impossible without water, and all newly installed plants require extra water while they establish their root systems, regardless of whether they are planted in spring, summer, or fall. During the summer months, observation becomes important because of higher temperatures and increased evaporation.

When plants are installed during the heat of summer, they may need longer watering periods than they would during cooler months. The good news is it is harder to overwater in the summer, which cannot be said for spring and fall.

This garden was installed in July of 2024 and the after picture was taken a year later when our maintenance crew was there in 2025.

Planning Ahead for Future Growth

Plants installed in summer still have plenty of time to establish before winter arrives. With proper watering and care, roots continue to grow throughout the season and into the fall, setting plants up for long-term success.
Whether you’re looking to add a pollinator garden, replace a lawn area with native plants, or refresh an existing landscape bed, there’s no need to wait for the “perfect” season.
