Benefits of Planting with Native Plant Plugs
Information about Buying Plugs at the LGS Native Plant Nursery
At Lauren’s Garden Service & Native Plant Nursery, we pride ourselves in having a wide selection of plugs available during the growing season. Depending on the season, we have plug sizes of herbaceous perennials, grasses, sedges, ferns, shrubs, and vines. Plugs can be planted in early Spring, Summer, Fall, and early Winter, though different species will do better if they’re cool or warm season plants. We share our plug list on the website here; Weekly Inventory List! Customers can stop in and buy individual plugs or full trays during our open hours from our sun or shade section. If you would like to pre-order a full tray, email us at Laurensgardens@gmail.com.
Why are Plugs Beneficial?
Cost: Cheaper than larger containerized plants. If you need to cover a lot of ground or are trying a new plant, it helps to keep costs down!
Size: Narrow diameter with deep roots means less work digging and disturbing the soil! Tools like soil knives or augers work well for digging small, but deep holes. Planting a soft landing underneath established trees or shrubs? Plugs work great in between roots!
Growth Rate: Plugs are often young first year plants and their root system is ready to expand out of their cell! Some species will flower in the first year of planting.
