Starting the New Gardening Season

Starting the New Gardening Season

I started working for Lauren’s Garden in 2015, not knowing much about flowering plants. I was familiar with some of my favorites, black-eyed Susans, irises and rhododendrons, but had no idea what most of the other beauties were called, whether they were native or not, and certainly not their Latin names.

But, a lot has changed since then. I’ve learned quite a bit from Lauren and our clients, and through repeated exposure, which is really how things sink in for me.

I know I am still far from being an expert. And that’s Ok. One of the things I enjoy most about horticulture is the seemingly unlimited amount of information there is to know and learn. There are many other things I enjoy about gardening; the smell of the soil and air on a spring day, the array of colors that can appear overnight, and the shear thrill of caring for a beautiful, living thing.

We are in the midst of spring cleanups, mulching and planting projects again. I look forward to seeing many of our regular clients that we’ve worked for over the past few years. Absorbing some of their plant knowledge and sharing the small fraction that I have is one of the highlights of this job. There is also a sense of a shared community between plant-loving people, an understanding that plants have a special place in our hearts.

So you might be able to tell, I am excited about this coming season. I’m getting kind of antsy, particularly with occasional warm days thrown into this winter. We have an experienced returning staff in place and a year under our belt at the ‘new’ farm location in Glenwood, so we are poised to have a productive year.

Since spring is our busiest time, now is the time to contact us to set up those spring cleanup jobs, mulching, maintenance, and natural weed blocker applications (when redbuds first bloom). It is also a good time to give us a call to start planning, designing and planting new gardens and designing and building new stonework- ponds, patios, walls, steps and more!

I, for one, am ready to get my hands dirty.
